A Flux of Flame and Ocean

Ronan greeted each of the Wayward Refugees at the door and then disappeared back into the kitchen, leaving them to their own devices -- but there were crackers with bruschetta to snack on in the mean time, and an interesting pomegranate soda to drink.

"Thank you for coming, everyone," Ronan said, smiling warmly, as he ushered them into the dining room. "I'm glad you all could make it. Isabel's the one who suggested dinner, so thank you, Isabel.

"Now, I hope you all enjoy!"

And with that, Ronan served the first course: Caesar salad with mushrooms and a homemade dressing, bacon and parmesan cheese served on the side for those who wanted them.

After the salad, the next course was a soup -- and the replacement of the cream by coconut milk should not only make it kosher, but lend it an interestingly sweet flavour underneath the savory.

Continuing the theme from the last course, dinner itself was a Thai green curry with chicken, served on a bed of fragrant Jasmine rice.

Jack filled a plate with crackers and bruschetta and took a seat near the wall. He didn't normally play the wallflower, but he hoped he'd be forgiven as one still recovering.

It would be interesting, seeing the others now that there was no immediate crisis. Well: None that hadn't been resolved.

Fortunately it didn't take Isabel all that much time to get dessert ready thanks to some creative use of the alien-fu.

There were small cups of spicy Mexican hot chocolate (http://allwomenstalk.com/10-ingredients-and-directions-of-mexican-hot-chocolate-shots-with-spicy-foam-receipt/) to drink. For nibbling there was a decadent pot of melted chocolate (http://img4.myrecipes.com/i/recipes/sl/05/11/chocolate-sl-1120220-l.jpg) with an assortment of ~~completely moddable~~ sweet and savory bites for dipping.

"I was going to make some elaborate chocolate creation. But sometimes I think simpler is better."

Also, I suddenly have real life things to deal with today and I'll be AFK from about 3:30 till a bit after 9 tonight.

"Jack!" Isabel smiled, once she'd deposited the dessert fixings in the kitchen and been subsequently chased out by Ronan. "How are you? How's your vampire? Everything back the way it's supposed to be?"

"Sweet, a little spicy. My favorite combination," Isabel grinned after the first taste.

It wasn't Isabel's fault that there was the slightest shadow of a wince behind Jack's eyes before he answered.

"The world seems to be about the way it was before everything started," he smiled. "Sebastien, too. What about yours? I remember you were worried about your family."

"They're fine. Back and bickering just the way they should be. We spent the holidays with them," she replied.

Isabel had noticed something a little off about his reply. But she didn't know Jack well to push and this wasn't the place for it anyway. "I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say good-bye before we left, but I know you and Emma were busy."

Jack took just a second before he laughed. It felt like far longer than a month since the day Isabel was talking about.

"We were happy," he said, the rhythms of his speech closer to normal. "Though I'm sure everyone was. I apologize for not having been more social, but it turns out that flying on a dragon-dog takes a lot out of you."

"I'm sure it was exhausting," Isabel answered with a laugh of her own. Because yes, she was certain that's what took a lot out of him. Yup, definitely.

"We were happy to get back to see our families though. And they were thrilled to see us. Especially once they heard our news." Even though Jack had already seen her ring that morning after, she wiggled her fingers. "We still haven't gotten a date set. Buy you and Emma are definitely on the invite list."

Jack grinned at her again. "That's wonderful. I've never been to a wedding I can remember. Do you know where you're having it?"

"No official date yet, but probably after we both graduate in May." Yes, it did make her inner obsessive planner twitch to not have a date yet.

"Don't worry. You'll always remember this one. We've got one hell of a guest list. A vampire, a demon, several aliens," she ticked off on her fingers. "Potentially two versions of Wyatt's mom."

"And just from the people here tonight, you can add ... whatever Parker is, a wizard, a psychic, and me," Jack chipped in. "It will be the wedding of the year. Possibly of many years. I'm guessing Wyatt's two moms is a Fandom thing?"

"Parker's a well-armed force of nature." Which was the polite way to put it. Potential bitch on heels was another. Isabel nodded at Jack's remark. It was so much easier when dealing with other Fandom people. They got the weirdness. "Yes, near as we can figure it's this alternate universe/timeline thing."

"The only person from my world I've ever run into here turned out to be from my same version of it," Jack offered. "I hope Wyatt gets on with his mother."

"I had one of my brothers turn up once. Just from a different point in our timeline. It was odd but we coped." She wondered how that particular version of Michael was doing these days. Hopefully he'd met his Maria."

"They get along." If that's what being awkwardly polite was called these days.

"But enough of boring you with still fluid wedding plans. What have you been up to? Did you go back to school after we saved the world?"

Jack cleared his throat out of minor social embarrassment.

"As it happened, one of my professors did not find saving the world enough excuse for the missed final, and ... other things lined up so that it made more sense for me to take a leave of absence for the term," he said. "It turned into a long story. I'm not actually quite sure what I'll do until I can start back in May."
